Date G. Roque once said, “Life is a rough biography. Memories smooth out the edges.” I agree with the point Roque was trying to get across. Roque meant that when people remember their past experiences it makes history more real. No one knows history like the people who lived in the moment. We can read history books and know the “facts” yet until you talk to the people who lived these moments, we never really know in detail what really happened. For example, if you ask a young student about what happened on September 11, 2001, I’m sure that they would tell you a rough explanation about what they have learned from text books and television, yet if you asked someone that lived the experience they will tell you more than the facts. They will tell their feelings at the time and the terror they felt. If we forget our past experiences and just live them through facts we would never know how horrific this memory truly was. Same with all memories: good and bad. Memories are the feelings and emotions of what happened, not just the facts laid out on paper. We must know through stories and memories to truly know what happens in life.

"Memory... is the diary that we all carry about with us."
~Oscar Wilde, "The Importance of Being Earnest"
Some people carry an actual diary and write in it every day. Other people keep everything in their head. We all have memories about the nearest and dearest things to us. Some thing we share with people and some we don't. The most personal things are in our memory and we're the only one with a key. It's something that no one can touch or get close to or read.
Back before there were books in ancient civilizations, the wise men of the tribe would pass down stories of their life and legends of the tribe through words embedding it forever in the memories of others. And now in their memory they have many experiences and stories to pass down to their children. In the Giver Jonas is the person of the tribe that recieves all the memories. The difference is he can't share them with anybody. He has the diary of the world in his mind and can't tell a soul.

~Oscar Wilde, "The Importance of Being Earnest". i agree with that quote because we will always carry memories with us and we add new ones everyday. even if they are exciting or not. and it is up to whether you are going to go and search for these memories or not and its up to you if you wanna make memories that you will remember.

God gave us memories that we might have roses in December.
~J.M. Barrie, Courage, 1922

The impression this quote leaves on me is that even in the roughest and lowest days of our lives, we can think of some great filed away memory to brighten our sights. When J.M Barrie says that god gave us memories that we might have roses in December, I believe he means that in the cold nights of a winter, we can think of the beautiful days of a warm, sun-drenched summer and all of the life and happiness it brings. When one thinks of those great things in the winter time, it brings joy and hope of what has happened, what is happening, and what will become.

"The past is never dead, it's not even the past" I do agree with this quote because everything that happens is never going to go away. you can remember the events in the past even if you dont want to. you make you own actions and they follow you for the rest of your life. Even tho the Giver didnt want to remember the release of Rosemary he couldnt seem to get it out of his mind. He didnt want to belive that her realease was his fault but he couldnt help it, if he had just not given her the bad memories, and now she was dead. That will always stay with him for the rest of his life, no matter how hard he tries to forget it.

The giver was the controller and he can feel the cold the warm but the other people didn’t know. So if we had a person in the world that controlled everything like the weather and what we have to do every day we would be satisfied their decision and we would make a better environment. Some people might not agree with it but if they never knew the difference with bad or good it wouldn’t make a difference to them. No, loosing diversity wouldn’t be a good thing, and then people couldn’t be different and have their own choices, beliefs. Things wouldn’t couldn’t change and get better for people they would go crazy without change or diversity.

"Memory is a way of holding onto the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose." -From the television show The Wonder Years.
I very much agree with this quote. To me this is saying that memories are everything that we as people have to hold on to. Without memories we wouldn't remember all of the wonderful things that have happened to us in life, and we wouldn't remember the tough things that made us who we are today. Memories are a way of letting people know who you are. If you're ever lost in the world you can just look back on your memories and remember why you are the person you are today. I often think about how I got the way I am and why I am the person I am today. All I have to do is think about all of the times and people that have crossed my life and taught me valuable things in life that I learned from. Memories are everything and I'm blessed to be able to remember my life.

Memory is a child walking along the seashore. You never can tell what small pebble it will pick up and store away among its treasured things.( Pierce Harris, Atlanta Journal) This is so completely true. You never know what little things stay in your mind until the days go on and you realize what is in your memory and what isnt. Life is full of thousands of little events nad its impossible to remember each and everyone of them one 100 percent clearly. This quote runs my mind back to the days in my life that didnt go so well. These days arent something you want to remember but for some reason you can always take yourself to those days. Most things you know if you'll remember them or not then theres the memories that just slip in your mind on their own and you'll thank them later in life for doing that.-jenn

I disagree with this quote, because yes it’s the past but everyone forgives and forgets. What I mean by this I have been a champion bull rider in a night and it’s the best feeling and ever ones exited. But then the next morning I am just a normal person and people over time forget about instance like that. Also you cant hold people to their mistakes because everyone makes mistakes in the past learns from them and moves on without looking back at them.

~Oscar Wilde, "The Importance of Being Earnest" Memories are things you can look back and remember good times and bad times you had in life. In the book The Giver the Giver talks about memories that happened to him like weather, color, beauty. He shared to Jonas how beauty and life really is. Some memories can be like a death that will always be attached to you and you can never let go but you go everyday thinking about that one special person that you loved very much. Or your first love, can be a memory you can look back and look how happy you are to be with that special person. I think this quote sums up my life so much because I have had my ups and downs in life and many memories to look back at and I know they will always be with me

God gave us memories that we might have roses in December.
~J.M. Barrie, Courage, 1922
We have memories so that in the dark times of our lives we can remember the happy and lovely memories. When we experience hardship it is our memories that can sometimes get us through those hard times. When going through a cold winter’s day in December we can remember those warm days of summer to help us survive. Without memories there would be no hope and in a sense no happiness. If we didn’t know things had a potential to go wrong we would never be appreciative of the times when it is going right.

Looking past the beautiful wording and picture this quote gives us, we find a much deeper meaning, one that each and every one of us can relate to.
When a member of my family became severely ill and had little mind of her surroundings, i felt detached. this was not the person i knew, this just was not. The only thing that kept my head afloat, was the days, nights, and fun i had shared with her before this incident. Without these memories i'm not sure how i would have fared in this tourturous time of my life.
Through everything, i had a whole boquet of roses that winter.

Memory... is the diary that we all carry about with us.
~Oscar Wilde, "The Importance of Being Earnest"

This quote, being very true, hits strong with me. Sense I was little I would record events(memories now) in my diary so I can go back and read them when I am older. Memories stay with us for a very long time and seem to be recorded in a special place in our brain. I can still remember my first time going to the Oregon Coast, the smell the sounds, the sights, everything. I like this quote alot because there are so many emotions that cannot be decribed on an actual piece of paper.

~Oscar Wilde. I agree with this quote. memory is like a diary because it reminds us of stuff thats happend to us. but instead of writing in a diary, your eyes write it in your brain. we recap over memories we have. we also read a diary to help us remember too.

I believe memories are what make us who we are. We remember the big things in life that made a big influence on who we are today. We learn from our mistakes and if we never remembered anyhthing how would we grow as a person. We remember the things we love and wish we could go bck to those times. Memories make us unique and teach us how to grow.
