The Giver pictures a community in which every person and his or her experience is precisely the same. The climate is controlled, and competition has been eliminated in favor of a community in which everyone works only for the common good.
Argue the benefits of sameness? Is the loss of the diversity worth the cost?

If everything was the same, we would have no war. We would have no reason to kill. No reason to hurt anybody else. Everybody would be okay with everything. But if everybody was the same we would not move forward in the future. We would not create things because many things that we create today also carry a certain power with them. In a community of sameness if one person gets power, they change everything leading to chaos that they don't know how to deal with. So, if we had a community of sameness I think that there would be very good things, but also very bad things. It is definitely not giving up diversity for, because diversity is what moves our world forward, making it a better place.
Like in a utopia, we don't know how to appreciate ourselves and those around us for their unique abilities without being able to acknowledge them. In a world of black and white, and in a society of the same, how is anyone supposed to work together for the common good if they don't even have a clue what the bad is like? When they are said to be working together for the common good, who is the person telling them that its for the good? Whats good is the opinion of a person. Without the citizens of that community knowing what the good is that they are working for, they won't know whether they really believe it to be good or bad.
In this world today many schools are trying out this new thing called school uniforms. this consept is taking the differences of people away and making everyone the same. As this seams like a horrible idea to most it may be bennificial. In school many students are teased because of what they wear and why its not as "cool" as what the popular group has.This uniform concept would put everyone on the dame level no one would be better than anyone else. This is the same thing around the world if everyone was the same there would be no war no fighting, no one gettign hurt for the right to be free. Diversity is our right as americans and it is most definatly worth the cost. I like having my own opinion and being able to sport whatever clthes i want at any time.
just imagine everyone arround you being compleetly the same as you...how boarting would that be? you cant becoume your own person if no one allows you do make your own decitions, and create you own oppinions. think of how much the people in the comunity were missing out, they couldnt experiance love, joy, warmth, all of the things that matter most to us. if you dont experiance the bad things in life how do you learn to appriciate the great things your rewarded with? the people in the coumuity had never experianced pain or sufferage, so how can they enjoy the great things life brings us...they cant!
This idea of sameness is one that is touched on often. There are many benefits of sameness. One benefit is that no one can be teased or ridiculed for what they wear or how much money they have, or where they live. When everyone is the same, there is no hate because there is nothing to hate. The people in the community in The Giver are taught that it is rude to bring out differences in people, like Jonas’s eyes, which are lighter than most other people in the community. The idea of sameness makes everyone feel the same and up to everyone’s standards. One the other hand, to give up diversity is to give up who we are. Being different makes each one of us unique and who we are. Without being different we give up all rights to who we are
If everything was the same, It would be very boring. Life wouldn't be adventuring and fun because everything would be the same, nothing is different. Being different is good, I think. In the Giver, everybody is the same, they don't experience much because it is a utopian community and it makes everything and everyone all the same. If things are different, like how Jonas is compared to others, then it makes you want to know more about him because he is different from others. Since they only know the sameness, nobody really knows about diversity because it doesn't really exist in the community besides the special ones with the light eyes like Jonas.
This is good to the community, because it doesn’t create conflict within the people. When their climate is controlled they don’t have much say on what they can and can’t do. What I mean by this is they can’t choose their carriers they are assigned to them. They can’t decide when they get to ride a bicycle it is earned by age. They don’t have to bear the pain of memories because there is someone that is assigned that job. This loss of diversity is worth the cost because it keeps things in order and running smoothly, because everyone has the same ideas as everyone else so there is no conflict.
Well i guess i couldn't say there are that many benefits for sameness. Everyone is different and thats how it has always been. Its good for us to be this way. But if we were all the same there would never be hatred towards one anonther because there would be no reason for it. Everyone would be equal in everything. If there is no hatred than there will be no war. But it would be a horrible thing if everyone was the same. We wouldnt be able to challenge ourselves or shape the future ahead of us. Lois Lowry wrote a book called The Giver and in that book everyone is the same. True there is no war, and yes true there is no hatred but you can see that it would be a horrible place to live in. Each and every one of us is different than eachother and that is most definatly a good thing. -jenn
If everyone was the same the community would be messed up. you could not be yourself and you could not express your ideas and opinions. everone would have the same birthday and it would not be special to you. i think that having diversity in your community is a great idea. it would get run alot better and smoother. sameness may sound great to some people but it sounds borng to me. i like being different and thinking on my own.
the benifits of sameness are, no fighting, no war, nothing evil, everybody is the same. Nobody ridicules anybody else because of theyre beliefs, or the color of theyre skin, or what they look like or who they hang around. But sameness isnt a good idea. its trying to make everyone perfectly alike. If we had sameness there would be no individuality. It would be boring.
In my opinion I completely disagree with the thought of sameness. If I had to argue the benefits of sameness I would say that if we had sameness in our community then there would be less opportunity for drama. There would be no need for war or fights. If everything were the same then there would be no hard choices in life. Everyday would be planned out for you and you wouldn't have to come up with a decision for your day. There would be no color therefore there would be no need to have to decide what color of shirt to wear that day because they would all be the same. There is no sunshine or snow so you wouldn't have to decide if you are going snowboarding or tanning that day. At the same time we would be losing our diversity within ourselves. I think the loss of diversity is most definitely not worth all of the benefits of sameness. If there was no diversity in our world then nobody would be individual. Our world as we know it would be bland an boring.
They were all the same, see the same colors, experience the same gifts, etc. No one was made to feel extra special, yet no one was made to feel left-out. The climate was controlled so the crops would be able to grow sufficiantly all year, and there was no hills, or mountains. In my experience, in living in Montana my whole life, one of the most stimulating things in my life is waking up each morning not knowing wheiter shorts or snowpants were necessary. The most vibrate opportunity i have here is seeing the beautiful mountains surounding me everyday. i cannot image living in a place much worse than North Dakota, when it come to fast flatness.

If every thing was the same there could be some good things and some bad thing .If every thing was the same then there would not be war ,there wouldnt be crime and there wouldnt be change.So then we wouldnt move into the future cuse then people wouldnt be makeing stuff.It would be the same all the time and i think people would get bored an try to be different. Diversity is choice that i think that a lot of poeple would choose over being the same cuse then they could have the right to be different.like in the book jonis wonted to be able to chose to be diforent
The giver was the controller and he can feel the cold the warm but the other people didn’t know. So if we had a person in the world that controlled everything like the weather and what we have to do every day we would be satisfied their decision and we would make a better environment. Some people might not agree with it but if they never knew the difference with bad or good it wouldn’t make a difference to them. No, loosing diversity wouldn’t be a good thing, and then people couldn’t be different and have their own choices, beliefs. Things wouldn’t couldn’t change and get better for people they would go crazy without change or diversity.
The benefits of Sameness are very well portrayed in The Giver. A small example would be like a school with uniforms. People are not picked out for being different. There isn't one person who is seen as better than the other. The book takes this to another level. By making all these rules and strongly drilling them into the communities mind the people all get along. There is no fights, no drama, no broken hearts, no enemies. People know the difference between right and wrong. But it's the right and wrong beliefs of the Community. I do not think the loss of diversity is worth the cost, the ways people express themselves is so important to me. I believe people need to have there own beliefs. If they can have there own ideas and feelings then they can be there own person. Even is that means everything isn't going to be perfect.
Sameness in small amounts can be beneficial. Unfortunately to have complete sameness, as expressed in the book, seems to not be worth it. Even Jonas himself finds himself wanting diversity once he receives his memories. He wants the choice between a red and a blue tunic, as he stated, but Jonas did also say that sameness was a good thing. Sameness in this community meant no decision making. Jonas said himself that he wouldn’t want people to make wrong decisions. I personally think sameness is not worth the cost. Those bad things in the world make you question this, but when looking at all the good in life, it seems diversity is more favorable.
Here are some benefits to sameness. You don’t have to make choices. Everything is already decided. You don’t have to feel left out or different. Everything’s the same so you don’t have to worry about chaos. You know what to expect and plan accordingly. The loss of diversity is not worth it because you also lose uniqueness, excitement, and adventure.

Therefore no advances in technology create a mediocre state of being in the human perception.
I don't think there are any benefits of sameness really. Sure there would be no wars no arguements and everything would seem to be going perfect, but I think it would be a boring way to live. If everything was the same there would be no future and nothing would ever change. It is definitely not worth the cost of giving up diversity.
